The following is a statement from Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann regarding dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Effective immediately, and until further notice, I have dispensed the faithful of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Despite the suspension of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, all regularly scheduled Masses will remain open to the public for those who wish to attend. I encourage those who can attend Mass to do so and join together in prayer for the health and protection of our entire community and for an end to this crisis.

In addition to attending Mass, if able, I encourage all families and individuals to pray the rosary, invoking the intercession and protection of our Blessed Mother, Health of the Sick, for these intentions and for the health and well-being of our brothers and sisters who are ill, for their caretakers, and for all doctors, nurses, medical and emergency preparedness personnel.

Do not come to Mass if you are sick, if you have been exposed to the coronavirus, if you suspect you have been exposed or if you have been advised by your doctor not to attend Mass.

  • Thanks to EWTN we are not missing Mass, but we miss the Eucharist! Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us.

  • I go to mass to get healed. And i thank Holy Church for allowing me to continue…for now. So i can get healing and true food.

  • My first thought, childish as it was, was that we don’t have to go to church. I then remembered that I want to go to Mass. This thing is getting scary, there are massive closings of schools and cancelation of events–not to mention empty store shelves where certain paper items once were. Basically, we are trying to protect life from an easily transmitted disease. The covid-19 kills the elderly who may be coping with other health issues. When I get sick, I will skip work and church. Until then, I’m going to be an adult.

  • I cannot imagine the arrogance of thinking that something that I might suffer is anything like our Lord has suffered for me. However, I do not want to be an unwitting carrier. The decision to attend mass is going to take some prayer.

  • I have not been attending since I have COPD and a cough. I was afraid that I would scare those around me!!

  • I appreciate the precautions but I just watched The Passion if the Christ . I will not let this keep me from Mass. I am healthy and would not attend if otherwise. But I need to be in the presence of my Lord What he did f or me!!’ I attend St Casimir in Leavenworth.. my Lord will protect me and I lesd the rosary also.
