KANSAS CITY, Kan. — In a medical emergency, the ability to speak for oneself can be lost in an instant. In those critical moments, preparation becomes more than practical. It becomes an act of care for the life and dignity God has given us.
One simple but powerful tool can help: the red folder.
Beginning as a small program in Topeka and Shawnee County, Operation Red File is now available in all Kansas counties. Distributed through Medicare, red folders are designed to hold essential medical information and attach to the refrigerator where emergency responders are trained to look first.
Inside the folder, individuals are encouraged to include medications, allergies, medical conditions, emergency contacts and physician information. Having this information immediately available allows EMTs to act quickly, avoid dangerous drug interactions and provide appropriate care without delay.
One Medicare representative explained it this way: “In an emergency, seconds matter. A clearly visible red folder gives first responders the information they need right away.”
From a Catholic perspective, this kind of preparation reflects the call to be good stewards of our health. It is also an act of charity which eases the burden on loved ones and helps caregivers respond with clarity and compassion.
“When a patient cannot speak for themselves, having their medical information readily available allows us to care for them safely and with the dignity every person deserves,” said retired physician Dr. Larry Riffel of Holy Spirit Parish in Overland Park.
While especially important for older adults, those with chronic conditions and individuals living alone, the red folder is a wise step for any household. Emergencies are unpredictable, but preparation can bring order to even the most difficult situations.
It is important to keep the folder up to date as medications or health conditions change. A few minutes of review can ensure that the information remains accurate when it is needed most.
The red folder is simple but with profound roots: love of neighbor, respect for life and faithful stewardship.
On the refrigerator door, it stands ready to speak when we may not be able to, and it can help protect the gift of life entrusted to us.
