St. Bernard Church in Wamego launches ambitious prayer initiative

St. Bernard Church in Wamego is inviting nearby Catholics to participate in eucharistic adoration.

WAMEGO — St. Bernard Church here is actively striving to establish 168 hours per week of eucharistic adoration by Jan. 1, 2027. The parish currently has eucharistic adoration for 64 consecutive hours per week from Wednesday morning until Friday evening.

“To be a disciple of Jesus Christ within the covenant family of the church means that we have a responsibility to pray not only for  blessings and graces for ourselves, but for our neighbors, and indeed the whole world,” said Father Nicholas Blaha, pastor at St. Bernard Parish.

“This chapel is meant to be a dedicated sanctuary where perpetual prayer is offered up for all the needs of the people in our community,” he continued, “and for them to experience the consolation, mercy and peace that only the Most High can give.”

The parish’s goal was set in conjunction with the Adoratio Foundation, a Catholic apostolate located in Beloit, Kansas.

Eucharistic adoration offers an opportunity for the faithful to pray and sit in silence with Jesus Christ who is sacramentally present in body, blood, soul and divinity, via a consecrated host.

Catholics believe this central teaching of the church: that Christ becomes truly present in the Eucharist when the priest consecrates the bread and wine during the Mass, and they are transformed into Jesus Christ’s real presence. For this reason, the exposed consecrated host in eucharistic adoration is never left unattended.
