Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann timeline

The following is a timeline of major events in the life and ministry of Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann.

• 1949: Joseph Fred Naumann born on June 4 to the late Fred and Louise (Lukens) Naumann in St. Louis, Missouri.

• 1967: Graduated from St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in St. Louis.

• 1971: Graduated from Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis.

• 1974-1975: Ordained transitional deacon, to St. Christopher Parish in Florissant, Missouri. Completed theological studies at Kenrick Seminary.

• 1975: On May 24, ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

•1975-1979: Associate pastor at St. Dominic Savio Parish in Affton, Missouri.

•1979-1984: Associate pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in St. Louis.

•1984-1989: Part-time associate pastor at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in St. Louis.

•1984-1995: Coordinator of archdiocesan Pro-Life committee.

•1989-1994: Pastor at Ascension Parish in Normandy, Missouri.

• 1994-2003: Vicar general for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

• 1997: Appointed auxiliary bishop on July 8 for the Archdiocese of St. Louis and titular bishop of Caput Cilla, received episcopal consecration on Sept. 3.

• 2003: In October appointed administrator of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

• 2004: Appointed coadjutor archbishop on Jan. 7 of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

• 2004: On March 19, installed coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, at welcoming Mass at Church of the Ascension in Overland Park.

• 2004: Coadjutor Archbishop Naumann celebrated his first Mass on March 21 at the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle in Kansas City, Kansas.

• 2004: In November Ad Limina visit to Rome.

• 2005: On Jan. 15, succeeded Archbishop James P. Keleher as archbishop of the archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

• 2005: Began strategic planning for the various pastoral regions (deaneries). The boundaries were redrawn in 2008, reducing the pastoral regions from 11 to eight.

• 2005: On May 25, Archbishop Naumann’s first ordination to the Northeast Kansas presbyterate, Father Bruce Ansems on May 25 at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Kansas City, Kansas.

• 2005: Archbishop Naumann’s first dedication of a free-standing Eucharistic Adoration Chapel on May 28 at St. Joseph Parish in Shawnee.

• 2005: On June 29, Archbishop Naumann received the pallium from Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

• 2006: On Feb. 18, the first cohort of permanent deacons in the archdiocese begin formation and studies.

• 2009: The newly formed Archdiocesan Pastoral Council met for the first time on March 16.

• 2011: Completed first historic all-parish tour of the archdiocese on March 27.

• 2011: Archbishop Naumann ordained the 17 members of the first cohort of permanent deacons for the archdiocese on April 9, at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Leawood.

• 2011: First biennial Archdiocesan Convocation of Parish Ministries held on Sept. 15 at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

• 2012: March, first Ad Limina visit to Rome as archbishop.

• 2013: The archdiocese capped its one-year Faith Initiative: Love It, Learn It, Live It event and began the next step, Proclaim It, at the biennial archdiocesan convocation of Parish ministries on Oct. 30 at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

• 2015: On January 26, Archbishop Naumann and the archdiocesan Envisioning Team began a process to produce a 10-year Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan and 10-Year Mutually Shared Vision.

• 2015: Apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri.

• 2018: The “One Faith. One Family. One Future . . . in Christ” capital campaign was launched in Spring 2018 and was wrapped up in June 2021.

• 2018: In November, Archbishop Naumann began his term as chairman of the U.S. Bishops Prolife Committee.

• 2019: Presided at the Enflame Our Hearts archdiocesan convocation, Oct. 3-5 at Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas.

• 2020: January Ad limina visit to Rome.

• 2020: The archdiocese took unprecedented to safeguard against the COVID 19 pandemic. The faithful were dispensed from the Mass obligation on March 17 and all public Masses were cancelled. Schools cancelled-in person classes and in April the seminaries adjourned. Holy Week and Easter liturgies were cancelled. Pastors adapted as best they could to provide the sacraments, and Archbishop Naumann began livestreaming Masses from his home chapel. Public Masses resumed on May 9

• 2022: Archbishop Naumann led mobilization efforts for the Value Them Both Kansas Constitutional amendment vote on Aug. 2.

• 2024: On May 4, the Behold KC Eucharistic adoration event was held, with the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri. It was part of the U.S. bishops three-year National Eucharistic Revival.

• 2024: The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage passed through the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas from June 24-29. Archbishop Naumann led multiple eucharistic adoration and prayer services. He traveled to Indianapolis from July 17-21, where the pilgrimage culminated at the 10th National Eucharistic Congress.

• 2025: Archbishop Naumann’s resignation was accepted by Pope Francis on April 8 after he submitted it to the Vatican upon turning 75 on June 4, 2024, as is required of all bishops.
