The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer tournament where teams compete in what has become one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.
The first World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay and included teams from just 13 countries. This year, a record 48 teams will compete.
The women’s World Cup is also held every four years but didn’t begin until 1991.
The United States has hosted the women’s tournament twice — in 1999 and 2003. This summer will be the second time the country has played host to the men’s tournament. The last time that happened was in 1994.
The World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 across 11 U.S. cities (including Kansas City, Missouri), three Mexican cities and two Canadian cities.
