Golf, baseball camp and more is on tap for a CYO summer

by Peter Piscitello

This time of year, it seems that everyone’s mind is on summer vacation. As school comes to a close and families plan for the warmest months of the year, our thoughts often turn to backyard barbecues, area pools or, perhaps, that family vacation.

Here in CYO, we certainly enjoy the summer months. Yet, far from vacation, we relish the opportunity to provide some of our favorite activities of the year as we also plan anxiously for fall.

If you haven’t taken advantage of our summer offerings in the past, you may want to add just one — or two — more things to that summer calendar!

The CYO summer centers around two activities: June is dedicated to golf and July to baseball.

This year’s CYO summer golf tournaments take place at Overland Park’s Sykes Lady course on June 23 and Sunflower Hills Golf Course on June 27. The tournaments are for all boys and girls, and feature fun for everyone from beginners to overachievers.

The Overland Park event has both par-3 and regulation nine-hole tournaments, while the Sunflower Hills course is an accessible nine-hole tournament. Whether a child is just picking up clubs or interested in tough competition, you’ll find something for everyone! Registrations remain open and spots are available, so register online now at: www.cyojwa.org.

While you’re there, check out what’s happening in July! The popular Mike Sweeney’s Catholic Baseball Camp returns July 20-22 and families are coming from across the country (and Canada!) to experience this one-of-a-kind camp. It’s three days of sacraments, formation and baseball instruction, with awesome speakers and big-league instructors.

Due to demand, we recently expanded the camp to include 25 more spots for boys 8-15, so visit the website at: www.catholicbaseballcamp.org today to secure one of the limited remaining spaces.

Even with summer excitement, we’re also busy planning ahead for fall sports. Early registration is already open, so get signed up now and plan ahead! Exciting new initiatives are in store for the 2016-17 year, including more programs for kids, increased health education for parents and streamlined digital offerings for coaches.

Remember that new for 2016, all children participating in CYO sports will be required to have a preparticipation physical completed. Log on now to register for sports, download the physical evaluation form and find out more about this important new initiative designed to assure our children are healthy and safe.

With so many exciting things going on in the coming months, I encourage you to get registered now and join in the fun. May God bless your summer months — we hope to see your families on the fields and courses!
