Three weeks.
That’s how long I have left here at The Leaven. My summer internship is coming to an end. My last day will be Aug. 30.
As my old boss used to say at the end of every shift, “It’s been real. It’s been fun. But it ain’t been real fun.”
Except that this has. This summer has been a blast. I got to meet some awesome people, learn about some interesting things and attend some cool events, all while building my resume and earning some college credit.
One of my favorite things I got to do this summer was go out on assignment.
I got to help cover things like the Pitching for Priests softball game and the Catholic Charities’ Refugee Youth Summer Program, which was a summer camp for refugee children to learn about the American school system. I loved doing stuff like that because it gave me an opportunity to go out and meet a lot of interesting people and see different places around the archdiocese.
I also really enjoyed just hanging out with The Leaven staff during lunch time or on afternoon walks and stuff like that. It’s much harder to enjoy what you do if you don’t enjoy who you work with, and I enjoyed working with these people.
I’ve learned a lot during my time here, both about myself and journalism (I had to write a five-page paper about it), and I’m a little sad my time here is almost over. But I’m also super excited for what comes next.
I’m going to spend my fall semester abroad in Spain, and in the spring, I’ll be heading back to Stillwater. I’ll probably try to get another internship somewhere next summer.
I’m not entirely sure what exactly the future holds, but I do know that I’m a little bit more prepared for it thanks to this internship.
I’d like to say thanks to The Leaven staff, especially Anita, for all of their help and for making this a fun summer. I’d also like to thank everyone who reads my articles for your support.
And last, but not least, I’d like to thank God for giving me this opportunity and helping me make the most of it.
So, it’s been real. It’s been fun. But most importantly, it’s been real fun.
